You’re on the second floor of the university library. You pass students typing away at tables, filling oversized comfy chairs, socializing. Not exactly the quiet you remember from when you were an undergrad. You’re here to revisit an antiquated purpose: to find a book, to know its call number, to find the right aisle of shelves, to walk down that aisle, and find that book, pull it off the shelf, flip through it—yes, this is it—close it up, smile, and take it downstairs, hand it to a lonely clerk behind a desk, who checks it out to you.

“Do you want a due date slip, sir?”

No, thanks. They’re never really due. Not for me.

Let’s go back. You’re here to find a book called Sounding the Center: History and Aesthetics in Thai Buddhist Performance GN635.T4 W66.
